Welcome to Indonesia

Indonesia is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia that straddles the Equator and lies between the continents of Asia and Oceania, as well as between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic country and the 14th-largest country by land area, covering approximately 1,904,569 km². It consists of more than 17,000 islands, of which around 6,000 are inhabited. The Indonesian archipelago is commonly referred to as Nusantara. Indonesia is also the world’s fourth-most populous country, with a population of over 280 million people, and is home to the world’s largest Muslim population, with more than 230 million Muslims. In addition, Indonesia is one of the world’s most diverse countries, with hundreds of ethnic groups, languages, and cultural traditions.

Indonesia shares land borders with Malaysia on the island of Borneo, Papua New Guinea on the island of New Guinea, and Timor-Leste on the island of Timor. It also shares maritime boundaries with Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, India, Vietnam, Thailand, and Palau, among others.

Jakarta currently remains Indonesia’s capital. In January 2022, the Indonesian government officially enacted the law establishing Nusantara, located in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, as the country’s future capital. As of 2026, the relocation of the national capital is still being carried out in stages, with government institutions gradually moving to Nusantara.
